Helpful Tips and Suggestions:
Wood Preparation: Choose a quality piece of wood free of large knots. When
cutting pieces, take your time and wear those safety glasses!
Sand all pieces completely to ensure there are no burs or rough edges. This stage
is crucial for a quality finished project. After painting, lightly sand all surfaces with a brown lunch bag or very fine grit sandpaper to remove the fuzz raised by acrylic paints. This step
is recommended if you do not plan to significantly 'rough up' the project.
Transferring Patterns: Place carbon or graphite paper on bare prepared wood beneath pattern and trace carefully. Be careful not to rub the wood too much during this process or you will leave smudges! Allow sufficient room between pieces for easier cutting.
Antiquing: This process gives the project an aged appearance. There are several antiquing mediums available - look for a waterbased formula in the color tones you like and follow the instructions carefully. Leave a little more medium in cracks and along edges for a more authentic look. Apply sparingly or generously, depending on the look you wish to achieve.
Finishing: As with wood preparation, this stage can make or break the project. Also, as with antiquing mediums there is a large selection of sealants to choose from. A waterbased clear varnish is recommended, in either a matte or semi-gloss finish. For rustic accents, most people choose to avoid overly glossy finishes. Follow the instructions carefully, apply it uniformly, and allow sufficient drying time between coats.
